Yogi Government Caps Lease Registration Fees to Provide Relief to Tenants, Landlords

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a cap on lease deed registration fees to reduce the financial burden on tenants and landlords and encourage the formal registration of rental agreements.

Under the revised fee structure, registration charges will be determined based on annual rent and the duration of the lease. For leases with an annual rent of up to ₹2 lakh and a tenure of up to one year, the maximum registration fee has been fixed at ₹1,000.

The notification also specifies provisions for leases with higher annual rents, with applicable charges governed by the prescribed rules. However, toll and mining leases have been excluded from the revised fee structure.

The move is expected to make lease registration more affordable, encourage greater compliance and provide clarity on registration costs for property owners and tenants.
