Woman Stabbed After Refusing Marriage in Phulbani

Phulbani (Kandhamal): A young woman was critically injured after she was allegedly attacked with a knife by a youth following her refusal to marry him in Phulbani on Sunday.

According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Shubham Swain of Banipalli village under Bhanjanagar block. He was reportedly in a relationship with the woman, a resident of Peonpada area in Phulbani town, for the past three years. The two had allegedly planned to marry and had earlier taken vows in this regard.

The incident reportedly occurred after the accused came to know that the woman had agreed to a marriage proposal arranged by her family. Enraged by her decision, he allegedly entered her house when she was alone and again pressured her to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her with a knife, causing severe injuries to her fingers and throat.

On being alerted by neighbours, personnel from Phulbani Town Police rushed to the spot. On seeing the police, the accused allegedly attempted to slit his own throat but was restrained and taken into custody.

Both the injured woman and the accused were admitted to Phulbani hospital. Hospital authorities said their condition is stable.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
