Woman Brutally Assaulted, Branded with Hot Iron by In-Laws in Bhadrak; Case Registered

Jajpur: In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 32-year-old woman from Odisha’s Jajpur district sustained severe burn and assault injuries after being allegedly beaten and branded with a hot iron by her in-laws in Bhadrak.

The victim, identified as Pranati Das of Dihudi Sahi-Kanikapada village, was found lying unconscious near her maternal home on Saturday. She was rescued by locals and rushed to the Mangalpur Community Health Centre before being shifted to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors said her condition is now stable.

According to reports, Pranati married Jagabandhu Das of Kalyani village in Bhadrak’s Dhamnagar area in 2016. However, her marital life was reportedly marred by frequent harassment and abuse.

In a complaint lodged at Mangalpur police station, Pranati’s mother, Jyotsnarani Das, alleged that her daughter had been regularly subjected to physical and mental torture by her in-laws. On Saturday, the abuse escalated when she was allegedly branded with a hot iron, leaving multiple blisters across her body, including her private parts.

After the brutal assault, Jagabandhu reportedly dumped Pranati near her parents’ house and fled. Villagers spotted her lying unconscious with burn injuries and foaming at the mouth before rushing her to hospital.

Family members of the victim have demanded strict legal action against the accused, alleging that prolonged domestic violence had left Pranati deeply traumatised and barely able to speak or move.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
