Wine shop sealed: Toxic liquor claims 2 lives

Bhubaneswar: At least two persons died allegedly after consuming toxic liquor in Laxmipur area of Odisha’s State Capital City Bhubaneswar prompting the excise officials to seal the liquor shop today.
One Biswajit Beura and Santhosh Nayak of Laxmisagar area along with five of their friends had purchased liquor from a shop in Laxmipur area and consumed it while having a feast five days ago. However, all of them were admitted at the hospital for treatment after they complaint of stomachache and burning sensation on chest.
Later, they were shifted to the ICU department as their condition deteriorated further. Unfortunately, Santhosh died some hours after he was hospitalized while Biswajit breathed his last today while undergoing treatment.
Irate over the death of two youths, the locals along with their family members staged a protest infront of the liquor shop and demanded closure of the shop and action against the owner and employees of the shop for allegedly selling spurious liquor.
The protesters also demanded adequate compensation for the family of the deceased persons and free treatment to the others who are currently battling with life.
A joint team of excise officials led by Khurda excise SP and Laxmisagar police reached the spot and sealed the liquor shop. They also collected samples for laboratory test to find out whether the protesters’ allegation of the shop selling spurious liquor is true. However, no official comments from the shop owner or the excise officials over the allegation have been received yet.
