US Open: Alcaraz Storms Into Quarter-Finals, Sets Up Shelton Clash

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz produced his most convincing performance since returning from injury, defeating American Tommy Paul in straight sets to reach the US Open quarter-finals on Sunday.

The second seeded Spaniard, playing his first tournament since April after a right wrist injury, beat 20th seed Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes.

Alcaraz fired 33 winners and controlled the match after breaking Paul late in the opening set. He will next face American Ben Shelton, who stunned former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

Shelton, who had needed four sets in each of his opening three matches, hit 12 aces and did not face a single break point against Tsitsipas.

Meanwhile, two-time defending women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka also advanced to the quarter-finals, where she will face Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova
