Uddish Suri Eyes Sooryavanshi, Dravid and Sehwag Juniors Ahead of U-19 Asia Cup

New Delhi: UAE left-arm wrist-spinner Uddish Suri is gearing up for the upcoming Under-19 Asia Cup, with his sights set on India’s promising youngsters, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Anvay Dravid and Aaryavir Sehwag.

Suri shot into the spotlight during last year’s U-19 Asia Cup when he dismissed Sooryavanshi, despite the Indian youngster smashing a spectacular 171 off 95 balls against the UAE. Suri finished with figures of 2/77 in his 10 overs, conceding just 23 runs in 23 balls to Sooryavanshi.

Almost a year later, Sooryavanshi has made his India debut at just 15, becoming an inspiration for young cricketers like Suri.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Suri praised Sooryavanshi’s achievement, saying his rise at such a young age proves that there is no age limit to reaching the highest level.

The UAE spinner also expressed confidence in tackling Anvay Dravid and Aaryavir Sehwag, sons of former India captains Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. He said he had watched their performances in the India-Australia U-19 series and the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and had already started preparing plans against them.

“We are in the same age group and at the same level. It’s not just about the names. I will try to get their wickets as well,” Suri said.

The spinner, however, faces the challenge of limited competitive exposure, having not played a professional match since December 16, 2025. He said consistent training over the past few months and experience at the UAE senior team’s camp had boosted his confidence ahead of the tournament.

Suri also shared the unusual story behind taking up left-arm wrist spin. Initially encouraged to become a wicketkeeper, he switched to bowling because his brother Tanish was already a wicketkeeper. His coach eventually developed him into a chinaman bowler, a rare combination with his right-handed batting.
