Suryakumar Yadav to stay T20I captain, BCCI to reveal India squad details next week

Suryakumar Yadav will continue to hold his T20I captaincy for the Asia Cup, crushing the hopes of Shubman Gill to take over the captain’s position. Gill’s good work as Test captain, in which he guided India to a 2-2 draw against England and set a record of 754 runs, didn’t matter to the selectors to hand over the position to him.

BCCI selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will declare the Asia Cup team on August 19 in Mumbai. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been recovering from sports hernia surgery, will be present at the meeting. Although he has been making positive progress towards recovery, including restarting net practice, his involvement in the tournament appears to be a sure thing.

Shubman Gill could even be left out of the Asia Cup team, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma looking set to retain their opening spot. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who impressed in England, has been told to concentrate on red-ball cricket and will most likely sit out the Asia Cup. Shreyas Iyer is also likely to be left behind.

Asia Cup 2025 will begin on September 9 in the UAE, with India playing UAE on September 10 and then Pakistan on September 14. The selectors will focus on a well-balanced team, taking into account issues such as workload management and recent performances.
