Student Union Elections: Buzz Over Campus Polls Intensifies, Notification Likely Today

Bhubaneswar: Speculation over the conduct of student union elections in Odisha has intensified, with the official notification likely to be issued on Monday. The nomination process may begin on October 7, prompting various student organisations to step up preparations across campuses.

While some student bodies have opposed holding the elections within such a short timeframe, others have demanded that the polls be completed before the Durga Puja vacation.

According to sources, the state government has largely decided to conduct the elections within a limited timeframe. The Higher Education Department is of the view that completing the entire process within around 10 days would help minimise disruption to the academic environment. Accordingly, the formal notification for the student union elections is likely to be issued today.

The possibility of elections being held on October 15 has also gained momentum. Voting and counting are expected to be conducted on the same day, with the results announced on campus. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected representatives is likely to be held on October 16.

If conducted as proposed, the elections would mark the return of student union polls to campuses after eight years. The elections had remained suspended for several years amid concerns over student unrest and campus violence.
