SOA Nursing students hold lamp lighting ceremony

Surjit Kumar Dhal, Bhubaneswar, March 30: Nursing students in spotless white, keen to serve a suffering humanity, lit candles before the portrait of Florence Nightingale and took the customary oath to serve mankind with sincerity, diligence and compassion at SUM Nursing College (SNC), faculty of nursing of the SOA Deemed to be University here, on Thursday.

            The lamp lighting and oath taking ceremony also coincided with ‘Rhythm-2019’, the annual day function of the SNC.

            The state’s Director of Nursing, Dr. Sujnanendra Mishra, who attended the programme as chief guest, urged the students to learn patience and compassion and practice skill to shine in the noble profession.

            Nurses are often found treating patients in rural areas where there were no doctors, he said adding though they studied nursing as a science, it was actually practiced as an art.

            Speaking on the occasion as Guest of Honour, Prof. Rajalaxmi Mishra, Principal of the College of Nursing at Berhampur, urged the students to realize the importance of the nursing profession and serve the people without discrimination.

            “Desperate people look up to your care and you have to play multifaceted roles,” she said.

            Ms. Jayashree Mohapatra, Director, Mahila Legal Cell and Honorary Member of Juvenile Justice Board in Puri Court, encouraged the students to serve as good nurses and at the same time take care of their own family.

            Dr. Pravati Traipathy, Dean of SNC, presented the report while Ms. Sasmita Das, Associate Dean, proposed the vote of thanks. The students who had excelled in various competitions were presented awards on the occasion.
