SJTA Seeks ASI Probe into Seepage at Jagannatha Temple Wall

Puri: The Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA) has urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a detailed scientific investigation following the detection of fresh seepage on the eastern side of the Meghanad Pracheri (boundary wall) of the Shree Jagannatha Temple.

In a letter addressed to the Superintending Archaeologist of the ASI Puri Circle on Sunday, SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee requested a comprehensive scientific study, including structural and material diagnostics, to identify the root cause of the seepage. He also sought permanent conservation measures in line with established conservation protocols.

Padhee further asked the ASI to undertake temporary repair work as an interim measure under its technical guidance and supervision to prevent any immediate damage to the historic structure.

The issue is not new. Last year, water leakage was reported at the Meghanad Pracheri, following which the matter was taken up with the ASI. Repair work was subsequently carried out by temple administration engineers under the technical supervision of the ASI. At that time, the SJTA had also requested a comprehensive scientific survey and a long-term conservation plan for the 13th-century structure.

Expressing concern over the recurrence of seepage on the eastern side of the boundary wall, along with the growth of moss, Padhee said the issue poses a potential threat to the long-term structural health of the wall.

“Considering the antiquity and sacred significance of the structure, such recurring seepage warrants urgent scientific attention,” he said.
