School Authorities to Visit Homes of Absent Students

The Directorate of Elementary Education, Odisha, has directed school authorities to visit the homes of students who remain absent for a week or more.
The move aims to protect child rights and ensure regular attendance in schools.
According to the advisory, teachers and school officials must identify students who fail to attend classes regularly. If a child stays absent for an entire week, teachers will personally visit the student’s home to understand the reasons behind the absence.
The School and Mass Education Department has sent letters to all District Education Officers (DEOs) and Block Education Officers (BEOs), instructing them to implement the directive immediately. The advisory follows a communication from the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR), dated December 26, 2025.

Officials emphasised that the initiative will help track absenteeism, address challenges faced by children, and strengthen the link between schools and families. By identifying the causes of absence—whether economic, social, or personal—authorities hope to improve attendance and reduce dropout rates.
