Sasmit Patra Demands Infrastructure Boost for Southern Odisha in Parliament

BJD MP Dr Sasmit Patra urged the Union Government to prioritize holistic development of Southern Odisha districts by strengthening railways, highways, and airports.
First, Dr Patra highlighted the importance of railway projects across Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri. He emphasised the need for faster execution of lines such as Gopalpur–Rayagada, Brahmapur–Sambalpur, Jeypore–Nabarangpur, and Jeypore–Malkangiri. Moreover, he called for the modernisation of Brahmapur Railway Station and the doubling of the Kottavalasa–Koraput line.
Next, he pressed for immediate upgrades to National Highways. He demanded four-laning of NH-157, widening of ghat sections in Kandhamal, and completion of NH-26 stretches in Koraput and Nabarangpur. Additionally, he stressed that the Vijayawada–Ranchi Economic Corridor and NH-326 in Malkangiri must be expedited to reduce accidents and improve connectivity.
Finally, Dr Patra turned to aviation. He demanded the commissioning of the Rangeilunda Airport in Brahmapur. He noted that Jeypore and Malkangiri airports face irregular schedules and cancellations, which hinder reliable travel. Furthermore, he proposed exploring smaller airstrips in eco-tourism-rich districts to unlock growth opportunities.
In conclusion, he reiterated that Southern Odisha’s growth is central to Odisha’s progress. Railways, highways, and airports form the three pillars of development, and their timely completion will transform the region’s connectivity and economy.
