Rice, Pulses Turn Costlier, Add to Consumers’ Burden

Prices of essential commodities have risen, with rice and pulses becoming costlier after a recent increase in sugar prices.
Fine rice has increased by ₹800–₹1,000 per quintal, while super-fine rice is up by ₹1,000–₹1,500. Pulses have also witnessed a rise of ₹1,000–₹1,500 per quintal.
In the retail market, parboiled rice prices have risen by ₹3–₹5 per kg, while raw rice varieties are up by ₹10–₹20 per kg. Basmati rice has increased by ₹20 to ₹170 per kg.
Tur dal is selling at ₹140–₹150 per kg, chickpea dal at ₹90 and chana dal at ₹80 per kg.
Adverse weather conditions and concerns over crop production are being cited among the reasons for the price rise. The government, however, maintains that adequate stocks of rice and wheat are available.
Higher MRPs on online platforms and rising prices charged by some offline retailers are also being blamed for the increase. The resale of free rice provided under government welfare schemes is another factor cited for the pressure on rice prices.
