Protests Erupt in Ujjain Over Shahi Masjid Demolition Plan

Ujjain: Tension prevailed in Ujjain on Monday as protesters clashed with police and stones were hurled during demonstrations against the proposed removal of a portion of the historic Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project ahead of the Simhastha 2028 fair. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, while heavy security remained deployed in the area.

The road-widening project involves widening a key stretch near the Shahi Masjid, with a portion of the mosque falling within the proposed alignment. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier allowed the partial demolition after dismissing petitions challenging the Ujjain Municipal Corporation’s decision.

Protests intensified on Monday, with demonstrators gathering near the mosque and opposing the removal. The situation turned tense after clashes with police and stone-pelting.

Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi criticised the proposed demolition and urged the state government and Ujjain administration to consider an alternative alignment for the road, saying public sentiments should be respected.

The issue has become a major flashpoint ahead of Simhastha 2028, with security forces maintaining a strong presence around the mosque complex as tensions continue.
