Police nabs prime accused in Jobra murder case

Surjit Kumar Dhal,Cuttack, June 12: Malgodown police on Tuesday arrested the prime accused in the recent gang war at Jobra in which a dreaded criminal Tapan Nayak was killed.
Three special police teams which had launched a manhunt nabbed Biswa Ranjan Mohanty alias Happy from his hideout in Zobra locality, informed Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Trinath Patel in a press meet here.
During interrogation, Happy confessed to his crime and gave recovery of Knife, the weapon of offence, said Patel.
Police said, the gang war was the result of the rivalry between two groups of criminals who were at loggerheads over the fishing in river Mahanadi at Jobra Barrage since long.
On June 9 at about 5PM, Tapan and his associate Ajay Behera had assaulted one Muna Reddy, a associate of Happy following a tussle over dispute in fishing at Zobra Barrage.
A provoked Happy then went to the house of Tapan along with three other associates at about 8.30PM with a preparation to kill him.
Happy called Tapan out of his house and the two engaged in a heated argument over the dispute. Later, Biswaranjan stabbed Tapan inflicting grievous injuries. His associate Ajay too sustained injury while trying to save Tapan.
The accused managed to flee from the spot immediately, Patel said adding, both the injured were admitted to SCBMCH where Tapan succumbed, the ADCP told adding that effort is on to nab the other three accused persons who are at large.
Several criminal cases are pending against Happy in different police stations, he said.
