PM Modi Pays Tribute to Freedom Fighter Parbati Giri in ‘Mann Ki Baat’

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to renowned freedom fighter Parbati Giri, recalling her contribution to India’s freedom struggle and her lifelong dedication to social service, during the 129th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that as India prepares to celebrate its 77th Republic Day next month, it is an important moment to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the architects of the Constitution. He noted that while people from all regions of the country contributed to the freedom movement, several courageous leaders remained unsung. Parbati Giri of Odisha, he said, was one such inspiring figure.

The Prime Minister announced that the birth centenary of Parbati Giri would be observed in January 2026. Recalling her life, he said she joined the Quit India Movement at the age of just 16 and went on to dedicate her entire life to social service, especially for the upliftment of tribal communities.
“Her inspiring life will continue to guide generations,” the Prime Minister said, paying his heartfelt tribute.
Parbati Giri (January 19, 1926 – August 17, 1995), daughter of Dhananjay Giri, was popularly known as the ‘Mother Teresa of Western Odisha’. A prominent woman freedom fighter, she played an active role in the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned for two years for her anti-British activities. After Independence, she devoted herself to social work, establishing orphanages, including one at Paikmal village, and spent the rest of her life caring for orphans and the underprivileged.
