OUAT Applies for GI Tag for Puri’s Famous Manikapatna Curd

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has submitted a Geographical Indication (GI) application for the traditional Manikapatna curd of Puri district, aiming to protect the region’s unique culinary heritage.

Renowned for its distinctive preparation method using organic bamboo baskets, Manikapatna curd is known for its thick texture, rich flavour and deep-rooted traditional significance.

Before filing the application, OUAT scientists documented more than 200 traditional producers associated with the delicacy. Officials said that if the GI tag is granted, it will provide legal protection to the product’s name and preparation method, prevent imitation and enhance its market value.

According to OUAT, the curd is closely linked to the rare Chilika breed of buffalo, which was recognised and protected by the ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources in 2012. These buffaloes graze on grasses and aquatic weeds around Chilika Lake, producing nutrient-rich milk that forms the base for the curd.

The delicacy is prepared using a traditional organic technique. Fresh milk is poured into specially crafted bamboo baskets, where the curd solids adhere to the basket surface. The baskets are then left to dry for around 24 hours before fermentation, resulting in a thick and creamy curd with a distinctive taste. In many cases, the curd is sold along with the bamboo basket in which it is prepared, adding to its authenticity.

Manikapatna curd also carries historical and cultural importance. Its origin is linked to the legendary Kanchi Abhijan and traditions associated with the Shree Jagannath Temple. According to folklore, a milkmaid named Manika Gauduni once offered curd to Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra.

OUAT officials said the documentation process took nearly seven months, involving the identification of producers, historical verification and the creation of a dedicated logo for the GI tag. They added that the GI recognition would help preserve the authenticity of the product while benefiting local producers.

Odisha currently has 27 GI-tagged products, reflecting the state’s rich cultural and agricultural heritage. If approved, Manikapatna curd will join this list as a protected traditional delicacy while also boosting the livelihoods of producers in the region.
