OSPCB Directs Temples to Enforce Ban on Single-Use Plastics Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step to curb plastic pollution, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) has directed temple administrations across the state to strictly implement eco-friendly practices and enforce a complete ban on single-use plastics. The move is in accordance with the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, and its subsequent amendments.
The Board observed that single-use plastic items such as carry bags, thermocol plates, cups, straws, and cutlery are extensively used during religious rituals and festive gatherings. This widespread usage has led to substantial waste accumulation in and around temple premises, prompting authorities to introduce stricter enforcement measures.
Under the new directive, devotees have been prohibited from carrying puja materials, prasad, or food items in single-use plastic packaging. Instead, they are encouraged to use sustainable alternatives such as bamboo baskets, leaf-made containers, and reusable cloth or jute bags.
Vendors operating within and near temple premises have also been instructed to sell puja items and prasad only in approved eco-friendly packaging. Temple administrations have been asked to facilitate the availability of bamboo baskets or leaf containers for devotees and ensure access to reusable alternatives.
Additionally, temples must install separate colour-coded bins for wet and dry waste segregation and ensure proper disposal through authorised municipal waste collectors. Nearby hotels, restaurants, and vendors have been directed to refrain from using plastic and thermocol cutlery, including cups, plates, straws, spoons, forks, knives, and plastic carry bags below 120 microns. Biodegradable and compostable alternatives such as leaf plates, wooden spoons, paper straws, and metal utensils are to be promoted.
The directive further outlines guidelines for ritual immersions, mandating designated enclosed areas in temple ponds or other water bodies for the proper disposal of offerings. Temple authorities have also been instructed to conduct awareness campaigns to sensitise devotees about responsible waste management practices.
The OSPCB has appealed to devotees, vendors, and temple administrations to cooperate in maintaining clean and green temple premises, underscoring the collective responsibility toward environmental protection and sustainable practices.
