One Killed, Three Critical in Explosion at Illegal Firecracker Unit Near Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Panic spread across parts of the Odisha capital late Tuesday night after a powerful explosion tore through an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit at Narisho village under Balipatna police limits, killing one worker and critically injuring three others.

The deceased has been identified as Abhina Kandi, who succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital. The injured — Muna Bhoi, Pramod Sahu, and Ramesh Tiwadi — are reported to be in critical condition.

Blast Heard Miles Away

According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred at around 10:30 pm while firecrackers were allegedly being manufactured inside the unauthorised unit. The intensity of the blast was so severe that the sound was heard several miles away, triggering panic in nearby villages. Several residents rushed out of their homes in fear and immediately alerted authorities.

Police personnel reached the spot soon after and cordoned off the area. Firefighters from Niali Fire Station were pressed into service and managed to douse the flames after considerable effort. The injured workers were first taken to Niali Hospital and later shifted to a higher medical facility due to the seriousness of their condition.

Probe Underway

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and identify those responsible for operating the illegal firecracker unit. Officials are also examining possible violations of safety standards and explosives regulations. Legal action is expected once the inquiry is completed.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by illegal firecracker manufacturing units operating in residential and semi-rural areas, putting lives and property at significant risk.
