Odisha Govt Approves ₹240-Crore Mahanadi Riverfront Development Project

Bhubaneswar: In a significant push to boost tourism in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved the ambitious Mahanadi Riverfront Development Project with an estimated investment of ₹240 crore over the next three years (2025–26 to 2027–28).

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Water Resources Department will execute the project. The initiative aims to promote eco-tourism, cultural, and spiritual tourism while strengthening the state’s economy.

“Mahanadi is the lifeline of Odisha. Developing key stretches of the river will not only enhance tourism but also contribute to the economic growth of the state,” said the Chief Minister.

As part of the plan, the government will develop the riverfront from Mandalia to Chaunapur in Sambalpur, with an investment of ₹160 crore. The project will include a park, jogging track, selfie points, open-air gym, bathing facilities, theme plaza, shopping complex, washrooms, and other modern amenities.

Similarly, the Kuakhai and Kushabhadra riverfronts near Pandra on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar will also be developed at a cost of ₹80 crore. Facilities planned include viewpoints, floating jetties, bridges, cafeterias, parking zones, and toilets.

In addition, the state government has proposed to set up watersports, an amusement park, a science park, and a herbal garden in partnership with private players. The project also aims to address riverbank erosion, water pollution, and conservation of river ecosystems.
