Odisha Govt Announces Compensation for Elephant Attack Victims, Suspends Forest Officials

Bhubaneswar: Following the tragic death of three individuals in an elephant attack in Dhenkanal district, the Odisha government has announced compensation for the bereaved families and initiated disciplinary action against forest officials found negligent in their duties.
Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia confirmed the government’s decision in a tweet, stating that the directive comes under the instructions of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He assured that compensation will be extended to the families of the deceased and added that strict action will be taken against any officials who failed in their responsibilities.
“Compensation will be provided by the state government to all the deceased who lost their lives in the elephant attack, and strict action will be taken against the officers who have been negligent in their duties,” Singkhuntia wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The incident occurred in Baghadharia village under the Rasol section of the Hindol forest range in Dhenkanal. Expressing deep grief over the loss of lives, the Minister offered prayers for the departed souls and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
In immediate response to the tragedy, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dhenkanal has suspended the Forest Guard-in-Charge and the Forester responsible for the area. Both officials have been attached to the Hindol Range and will face disciplinary proceedings, pending approval from higher authorities.
The state government’s swift action underscores its commitment to wildlife conflict mitigation and holding officials accountable in ensuring the safety of residents living near forested regions.
