Nor’wester Storms Threaten Odisha Till Mid-May

Weather experts warned that Kalbaisakhi storms may continue across Odisha until the second week of May.
Meteorologist Sarat Chandra Sahu stated that afternoons will remain vulnerable to severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. He cautioned that hailstorms could also strike certain areas. The period between 2 PM and evening is expected to be most dangerous, with residents advised to limit outdoor activities.
Kalbaisakhi storms are common in Odisha during March to May, but experts believe their intensity is increasing due to climate change. The final week of March and the first two weeks of May may witness frequent storms. Farmers, labourers, and those engaged in outdoor work face higher risks. Falling trees, damaged houses, and loss of life and property remain possible outcomes.
The Odisha Meteorological Department may issue red and orange alerts during this period. Authorities urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid metal objects and water bodies, and check rooftops and electrical connections for safety. Regional weather centres are monitoring conditions closely and will provide updates.
