Nor’wester Storms Lash Odisha: IMD Issues Orange Alert for 4 Districts

Unstable weather conditions continue to impact Odisha, as Nor’wester storms bring sudden thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall across several districts, even as daytime heat persists.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts warning of continued storm activity over the next few days due to an active cyclonic circulation over the region.

Orange Alert for Four Districts

An Orange Warning has been issued for the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, and Balasore, indicating the likelihood of severe weather conditions.

Wind speeds in these areas may reach 50–60 kmph, accompanied by lightning and possible hailstorms, raising concerns over safety and infrastructure damage.

Yellow Alert Across 23 Districts

In addition, a Yellow Warning has been sounded for 23 districts, urging residents to stay cautious as thunderstorms and gusty winds may occur intermittently.

Authorities have advised people to avoid open spaces during lightning and take necessary precautions to minimise risk.

Weather Forecast: What to Expect

March 28–29:
Thunderstorm activity will remain active across northern and coastal regions, including Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Sundargarh, with lightning and strong winds expected.

March 29–31:
Rainfall intensity is likely to decrease gradually, becoming confined mainly to Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar. However, thunderstorm risks will continue.

March 31–April 1:
Weather activity is expected to intensify again, spreading to more districts such as Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Koraput, and Rayagada.

Cause: Cyclonic Circulation Over Region

The current weather pattern is being driven by a cyclonic circulation over Odisha and adjoining areas. This system is creating atmospheric instability, leading to frequent evening storms typical of pre-monsoon Nor’wester conditions.

Safety Advisory

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid taking shelter under trees during storms
  • Stay indoors during lightning activity
  • Secure loose objects to prevent damage from strong winds
  • Follow official weather updates regularly

Recent Impact

Recent storms have already caused damage in parts of the state, including incidents of uprooted trees and casualties reported in northern districts.
