No Pressure on Crime Branch in Soumya Ranjan Death Probe, Says Odisha DGP

Odisha DGP Vinaytosh Mishra has said there is no pressure on the Crime Branch in its investigation into the alleged death of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain in Balianta.

The DGP said Soumya’s parents had met him and raised their concerns, which were taken into consideration by the investigating team. He said the incident occurred around 10 am in broad daylight and was witnessed by several people. Investigators also have video footage and other evidence, he added.

Addressing questions over a lie-detection test, Mishra said there was currently no need to conduct one on anyone else as investigators have sufficient evidence. However, he clarified that such tests would be conducted wherever the Crime Branch considers them necessary.

The DGP said a person who was with Soumya on the intervening day had already undergone a lie-detection test. He also said some people initially arrested based on names mentioned in the FIR were later released after the Crime Branch found them innocent.

“Crime Branch will work in a completely professional manner. There is no question of any pressure or coercion,” Mishra said, adding that the agency would take all legal steps required during the probe.
