Mohammed Moquim Floats New Regional Party, Name to Be Finalised Soon

Cuttack: Expelled Congress leader and former Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim on Tuesday disclosed possible names for his upcoming regional political party in Odisha, which is expected to be formally launched soon.

Moquim said the proposed outfit may be called either Odisha Janata Congress or Odisha Lok Congress, though a final decision on the name is yet to be taken. The new party, which will be Odisha-centric, is set to be officially announced in the last week of March.

As part of the build-up to the launch, two major public gatherings are planned — a women’s rally on January 30 and a farmers’ rally on February 5. Moquim said these events would help outline the party’s vision and connect with people across the state.

Clarifying the party’s ideological position, Moquim said the new organisation would remain secular and be guided by the ideological principles of the Congress. He added that while the final name is still under consideration, the word “Congress” would remain part of it to reflect its people-centric approach.

Moquim further stated that the party would focus exclusively on the welfare of the people of Odisha and function in accordance with the Constitution of India, drafted by Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Emphasising inclusivity, he extended an open invitation to leaders from various political parties who wish to join the new platform.

Addressing recent reports of resignations from the Congress, Moquim said leaders leave parties for different reasons and that those interested in joining his new party would be welcomed.

Moquim had earlier announced his decision to float a regional party after being expelled from the Congress in December last year. The party had cited “anti-party activities” following his letter to senior leadership seeking a change in the Congress presidency.
