Maharashtra Makes Aadhaar Mandatory for Property Registrations

Mumbai: Maharashtra has made Aadhaar authentication mandatory for registering immovable property documents from October 1. The new rule covers 63 types of registrations, including sale, purchase, mortgage and partition deeds.
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the move aims to curb fraud, impersonation and the use of fake parties or witnesses in property transactions while reducing human intervention.
Those without an Aadhaar number will have to submit proof of Aadhaar enrolment along with other government-issued identity documents and relationship proof, with registration subject to verification.
Special provisions have been made for children and eligible beneficiaries, who cannot be denied registration benefits solely for not having an Aadhaar number.
