Locals Block Road After Class V Student Found Dead In Well In Nayagarh

Gania (Nayagarh): Tension gripped Belpada village under Gania block in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Wednesday after the body of a 10-year-old student was recovered from an open well. Angry villagers staged a road blockade on the Kantilo–Daspalla route, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Bijay Mallick, a Class V student of Belpada Primary School.
According to reports, Bijay left school on Tuesday afternoon after having his mid-day meal at around 1 pm, reportedly to relieve himself, but did not return. When teachers noticed his prolonged absence, they informed his family. As the boy did not return home by night, villagers joined the search operation. A written complaint was later lodged at Gania Police Station.
On Wednesday morning, Bijay’s body was found in an open well near the village. The discovery triggered outrage among residents, who placed the body on the road and began a protest, alleging foul play.
“We demand justice. Our child did not die naturally,” a family member said, urging authorities to conduct a proper and transparent investigation.
Police officials, including the IIC of Gania Police Station and the SDPO of Khandapada, reached the spot and initiated an inquiry. As of the latest reports, the road blockade continues, with villagers insisting on swift action and clarity regarding the circumstances of the child’s death.
