Light and Sound Show at Khandagiri–Udayagiri Caves Set to Open Soon

Bhubaneswar: The long-awaited light and sound show at the historic Khandagiri–Udayagiri caves is finally nearing completion, with all major groundwork already in place. A successful trial run has been conducted, and the project now awaits only the final power connection before it can open to the public.

Equipped with advanced lighting and sound systems, the show is designed to offer visitors an immersive experience highlighting the rich cultural heritage of one of Odisha’s most iconic archaeological sites.

Although the project was completed in December 2023, it remained non-functional for several months due to delays in securing an electricity connection, which had drawn criticism from locals. Over time, vegetation had even begun to grow over the site as the inauguration faced repeated postponements.

Developed by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the show will take place in front of the Rani Gumpha at Udayagiri Hill. Visual projections on the rock surfaces will be accompanied by a five-microphone sound system, with proper seating arrangements for visitors.

Officials have ensured full compliance with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) guidelines to protect the heritage monuments. As per the agreement, ITDC will bear the maintenance and electricity expenses for five years from the launch. Revenue from ticket sales will be shared between ITDC and ASI in a 60:40 ratio.

According to a senior Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) official, the remaining work is expected to be completed within 15 days. Authorities plan to open the attraction to tourists by the end of this year, adding another cultural highlight to Odisha’s capital city.
