Ladakh to Get Its First Government Medical College in 2027-28 Academic Session

Ladakh is set to take a major step forward in medical education, with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approving the launch of its first government medical college in Leh from the 2027-28 academic session.

The approval came following the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, paving the way for the establishment of a medical education institution that has long been sought by the people of the Union Territory.

As part of the preparations, recruitment to 103 sanctioned regular positions will be undertaken in phases, based on the institution’s academic and operational requirements.

The proposed medical college is expected to provide greater opportunities for students seeking to pursue medical studies within Ladakh. It will also help improve clinical training infrastructure and support the development of healthcare services across the region.

The initiative is being viewed as an important milestone in strengthening Ladakh’s medical education infrastructure and improving access to quality healthcare in the years ahead.
