Krushna Balaram Besha of Living Trinity Today

Puri: Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha and Prabhu Balabhadra in the Srimandira of Puri in Odisha be adored with the ‘Krushna Balaram Besha’ today. They will be dressed like Lord Krishna and Balarama on the “Trayodashi (thirteenth day) of “Krushna Pakshya” (dark fortnight) of the lunar month “Bhadraba” today. This is known as the “Krushna Balarama Besha”.

In Krushna-Balaram besha various materials like “solo” (pith), cane, cotton and flowers are used to create this “Besha”. Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha will be dressed like Lord Shree Krushna, Balabhadra Prabhu in Balaram Besha and Maa Subhadra Devi will be in a Padmasana posture, dressed in Chaturbhuja Besha bearing ‘Ayudhas’.

Both Krishna and Balaram will wear two wooden feet and will be seen standing in the pose of ‘Chhandapaya’ (crossed leg position). Jagannath will be adorned with a golden flute in one hand and a lotus flower in the other. Balaram will also adorned with a horn in his right hand and a lotus flower in his left hand. A seven-headed snake (Saptapheni Naaga) made of pith is placed. In this Besa, Shri Jagannath and Shri Balabhadra will wear a turban each.

Today, in this Krishna Balaram Besha, the deities wear many ornaments like Shripayara, Paunji, Pahuda, Godamudi (toe ring), Mallikadha, Chandra, Cheeta, Nakachana, Haatafera, Khadu. Subhadra’s head is also adorned with a kirita (crown).

All the deities are adorned with abundant flowers and leaves including Kadamba flowers.

This Krishna Balaram besha begins after the Dwiprahar Dhupa and continues till the Sandhya Dhupa. In this besha, Mahaprabhu is offered his favorite Khiri and Amalu.
