Kolkata Police Detain Bargarh Jeweller in Alleged Gold Payment Default Case

Bargarh: Kolkata Police have detained a prominent gold jeweller from Bargarh in Odisha in connection with an alleged default in payment for gold worth several lakh rupees.

The accused, Hemant Verma, owner of Danwar Jewellers, was taken into custody following the registration of a case at a Kolkata police station. He is accused of purchasing gold from Kolkata-based traders and failing to clear the payment.

Acting on the complaint, a team from Kolkata Police arrived in Bargarh and detained Verma with the assistance of the local police. Sources said the police team included Sub-Inspectors Prashant Kar Das and Kabita Samant, and the operation was carried out in coordination with Bargarh Police.

Police officials said due legal procedures were followed and further action would depend on the outcome of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings in Kolkata.

The detention has sparked discussion in Bargarh, as Verma is a well-known jeweller in the town. The case has also drawn attention to increasing scrutiny of high-value commercial transactions across state borders, with authorities emphasising the need for financial transparency and legal compliance.
