Kashi Vishwanath temple to become plastic-free from August 10

Varanasi: In a big step towards environmental sustainability, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust has announced a complete ban on plastic usage within the temple premises. The decision was finalized during a trust meeting held on Sunday, ahead of the holy month of Sawan, which begins on July 11.

The ban reportedly will come into full effect from August 10, after the conclusion of Sawan, a month when millions of devotees visit the temple to offer prayers and sacred water to Lord Shiva.

To ensure a smooth transition, the temple administration will run awareness campaigns throughout Sawan to inform and educate devotees about the new plastic-free rules.

According to the reports, Chief Executive Officer Vishwabhushan Mishra shared that the trust had resolved back in December 2024 to implement this ban.

Now, the plan is ready, devotees will not be allowed to carry any plastic items inside the temples, including plastic packaging for flowers, milk, water or garlands. Instead, they will be encouraged to use eco-friendly alternatives.

Single-use plastics have already been prohibited, but the complete ban is expected to further protect the temple environment and promote responsible practices.

Additionally, the administration will use social media campaigns and on-site advisories to remind visitors about the new rules and encourage them to support the temple’s sustainability mission.
