Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo Takes Oath as Patna HC Chief Justice

Patna: Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on Wednesday. Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan. Justice Sahoo is the 47th Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, members of the state cabinet, judges of the Patna High Court, and other distinguished dignitaries.

The Union Law Ministry had formally notified Justice Sahoo’s appointment on January 1 following approval by the President. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name during its meeting held on December 18, 2025.

Prior to this appointment, Justice Sahoo was serving as a judge of the Odisha High Court. He takes over the post after Justice Sudhir Singh, who had been functioning as the Acting Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa Bajanthri in October.

Justice Sahoo has had a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades. Born in 1964, he completed his matriculation from Nayabazar High School in Cuttack and pursued a Bachelor of Science degree from Stewart Science College. He later earned Master’s degrees in English and Odia from Utkal University.

Coming from a family with a strong legal background, Justice Sahoo was mentored by his father, the late Sarat Chandra Sahoo, a renowned criminal law expert, which helped shape his deep understanding of legal principles. He enrolled as an advocate with the Odisha State Bar Council on November 26, 1989, and also worked closely with senior advocate Dr Manoranjan Panda.

Known for his expertise in criminal law, Justice Sahoo built a strong reputation at the bar. In recognition of his legal acumen, he was appointed as a judge of the Odisha High Court on July 2, 2014.
