Jio Rejects TRAI’s 80% Network Slicing Threshold

Reliance Jio has opposed TRAI’s proposal to treat 80% network utilisation as a threshold for identifying congestion, warning that it could result in unnecessary network investments and false congestion alerts even when users are not facing any service issues.
Jio has also objected to TRAI’s proposed requirement for telecom operators to notify authorities in advance before creating new network slices. However, the company did not provide detailed reasons for its objection in its latest comments.

Airtel has also raised concerns over the proposed 21-day advance notice, saying the requirement could slow down network configurations needed for enterprise services, emergency operations and other specialised applications.
The Broadband India Forum, meanwhile, has flagged concerns over application-specific prioritisation. It said giving certain applications preferential speeds or guaranteed bandwidth could amount to paid prioritisation and potentially raise net-neutrality concerns.
BIF, however, has not opposed network slicing itself. It has called for transparent deployment without discrimination between applications or any adverse impact on regular internet services.
