ISKCON Faces Backlash Over Plans for Off-Season Rath Yatra in Taiwan

Bhubaneswar: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has once again stirred controversy after announcing plans to organise an off-season Rath Yatra in Taiwan. According to the schedule, the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will be pulled on November 23 at Ximending MRT Exit-6 locality in Taipei.

The announcement has drawn strong criticism from devotees and Jagannath culture enthusiasts, particularly within the Odia community. Many have expressed disappointment over what they perceive as a disregard for the sanctity and traditional timing of the world-famous Rath Yatra, which is traditionally celebrated in Puri during the month of Ashadha (June–July).

Cultural experts have also raised concerns about ISKCON’s repeated organisation of such events in non-traditional contexts across the globe, calling it “culturally inappropriate” and “against Jagannath tradition.”

Promotional materials for the Taiwan event highlight cultural performances, devotional Kirtans, Yoga sessions, and community activities to attract participants.

Despite the growing criticism, ISKCON has not yet issued an official response addressing the concerns raised by devotees and cultural custodians.
