IRS Officer Booked for Alleged Rape and Blackmail in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The Sahid Nagar Police have registered a case against an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer on charges of allegedly raping a young woman inside his government quarters in Bhubaneswar and threatening her with circulation of an obscene video.
According to the complaint lodged by the survivor, the officer resides with his family in government quarters at Satsang Vihar under the jurisdiction of Sahid Nagar police station. Earlier this month, the officer and his wife were reportedly unwell, following which his sister came to Bhubaneswar to visit them. She was accompanied by a young woman friend from Kujang.
The complaint states that on the 15th of the month, the officer’s wife and sister had gone out for some work, leaving the young woman alone in the quarters. During that time, the officer allegedly asked her to watch a movie on his laptop. When she agreed, he reportedly played obscene content and subsequently sexually assaulted her.
The survivor has further alleged that when she resisted and threatened to report the matter to the police, the officer claimed he had secretly recorded her while she was changing clothes in the bathroom. He allegedly threatened to circulate the footage if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Fearing social stigma and intimidation, the woman left the quarters without informing anyone. About four hours later, when the officer’s wife and sister returned and enquired about her whereabouts, the officer reportedly told them that she had received an urgent call from her village and left suddenly.
After returning to her village, the woman initially remained silent about the incident. However, on the 18th of the month, she allegedly came to know that a video recorded by the officer had been circulated. When she contacted him, he reportedly asked her to meet him at a hotel in Puri and threatened to send the video to her family members if she refused.
Left with no option, the young woman approached Sahid Nagar Police Station and lodged a formal complaint. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the allegations. Further details are awaited as the probe progresses.
