IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain in Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms in several Odisha districts over the next five days, issuing Yellow Warnings for multiple regions till August 8.


The weather alert comes as the monsoon trough extends southeastwards towards the northeast Bay of Bengal, likely triggering widespread rainfall activity.

Key warnings:

  • Sunday (Aug 3–4): Light to moderate rain or thundershowers in parts of North Odisha; isolated rainfall in South Odisha.
    Yellow Alert for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) in districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

  • Monday (Aug 4–5): Similar conditions expected, extending to Rayagada and Koraput districts.

Yesterday, Nayagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 37.0°C, while Phulbani and Nabarangpur logged the lowest minimum at 22.0°C.

Authorities have urged residents in affected districts to stay alert for lightning strikes, waterlogging, and slippery roads during the forecast period.
