Hyderabad Airport Introduces Therapy Dogs for Passenger Comfort

Hyderabad: In a move aimed at easing the stress of air travel, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has introduced a unique initiative featuring trained therapy dogs at the terminal. Under the programme titled ‘Paws and Peace’, passengers can now interact with therapy dogs at designated areas within the airport.
Launched to create a calming environment amid the usual rush of travel, the initiative places two therapy dogs at key locations beyond the security check in both domestic and international departure terminals. The dogs, always accompanied by professional handlers, are available for interaction for four to six hours each day.
According to airport officials, zones such as retail areas and boarding gates have been carefully selected to allow spontaneous yet relaxed engagement between passengers and the dogs. Activities include gentle petting sessions, supervised games of fetch, and quiet companionship. Special selfie zones have also been set up for travellers to capture memories with the dogs.
Importantly, the interactions are entirely voluntary, with the dogs trained not to approach passengers unless invited. “The goal is to offer gentle, soothing companionship—particularly for nervous flyers or those seeking a brief moment of calm,” said an RGIA spokesperson.
To ensure the welfare of the animals, their daily work hours are limited, giving them sufficient time to rest. Additionally, RGIA has issued guidelines for engaging with the dogs: passengers must approach calmly, follow handler instructions, and avoid loud noises or sudden movements. Flash photography is discouraged, and children must be accompanied by adults. Those with allergies are advised to keep a safe distance.
The initiative has been welcomed by many as a thoughtful step towards enhancing passenger experience, blending comfort, care, and innovation in a high-stress environment.
