GST Squad Seizes 27 Tonnes of Betel Nuts in Sambalpur

Bhubaneswar: The special enforcement squad of the GST Department seized a goods vehicle carrying a huge consignment of betel nuts during a late-night surprise check in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Friday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the enforcement team intercepted the truck near Bareipali Square as it was entering the city under the cover of darkness. A detailed inspection of the vehicle led to the recovery of around 27 tonnes of betel nuts.

According to officials, the driver failed to produce any valid documents or invoices related to the transportation of the goods. Authorities are now probing whether the seized consignment was meant for use in the manufacturing of gutkha or other chewing tobacco products.
Sources said the driver has been served a notice and directed to submit proper documentation within three days. If he fails to do so, the GST Department will initiate appropriate legal action under the relevant provisions of the GST Act.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
