Grand Farewell for Raja Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo in Khariar

Bhubaneswar: The final rites of Raja Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo, the revered King of Khariar and an eminent scholar, were performed amid deep mourning, with his mortal remains taken in a grand procession through the streets of Khariar.

Thousands of people, including local residents, dignitaries, scholars and admirers, joined the procession to pay their last respects. Several educational institutions in Khariar declared a holiday to honour his memory and lifelong contributions. The atmosphere was marked by grief and reverence as people from all walks of life bid a solemn farewell to the Raja.

Born on August 29, 1946, Raja Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo passed away at 1.35 pm on Sunday after suffering sudden chest pain. His wife, Rani Rajashree Devi, was present during his final moments.

Widely respected as a historian and archaeologist, Singh Deo was known for his immense contribution to the fields of history, archaeology and anthropology. An alumnus of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, he held two doctorates from Sambalpur University and Sanskrit University, Tirupati. A prolific writer and researcher, he authored 19 books, many of which are used as textbooks in universities across India and abroad.

Under his guidance, several historically significant sites in Nuapada district were discovered, leaving a lasting impact on regional historical research. His death has created a deep void in the academic and cultural circles of Odisha.

It may be recalled that Raja Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo ascended the throne of Khariar in 2004 following the demise of his father, Anup Singh Deo. His legacy as a scholar, researcher and royal figure is expected to inspire generations to come.
