Gadkari Inaugurates 84th Indian Roads Congress in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday inaugurated the 84th Annual Session of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) in Bhubaneswar in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Addressing delegates at the event, Gadkari said India is witnessing a major transformation from being a fuel-importing nation to one that aims to export clean and alternative fuels in the near future. He emphasised the government’s push toward the use of ethanol, methanol, bio-LNG, CNG, and green hydrogen to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Highlighting the Centre’s commitment to road safety, Gadkari said that modern engineering practices, intelligent transport systems, and national awareness programmes are being integrated to ensure safer and more efficient road networks across the country.

The minister also underlined the crucial role of road engineers, stating that their technical precision determines the safety, sustainability, and longevity of India’s road infrastructure. He urged engineers to prepare accurate and forward-looking Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and to adopt eco-friendly innovations such as bio-bitumen and recycled plastic waste in road construction.

“Our mission is to build world-class infrastructure that combines innovation with sustainability,” Gadkari said. “This vision will not only enhance mobility but also generate employment and strengthen India’s infrastructure skill ecosystem.”

He added that the government’s focus on green mobility and sustainable road construction will pave the way for a self-reliant and resilient India.
