FSSAI Proposes Front-of-Pack Warning Labels

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed introducing front-of-pack nutrition labels on packaged foods that contain excessive levels of salt, sugar or fat.
The proposal, submitted in an affidavit to the Supreme Court, suggests using a red hexagonal warning symbol on the front of such products, clearly identifying the nutrient that exceeds the prescribed limit.

The draft rules will be discussed with the public and food industry before being finalised. FSSAI expects the regulations to be completed within around four months after the consultation process.
