Four more gates opened in Hirakud Dam

Sambalpur: The heavy rains in Odisha have lashed out in several parts of the state. The incessant rains have created inundation problems in Sambalpur. The rain water has flooded into the houses and people are stranded in knee deep water.

To release the rain water, as many as four sluice gates of Hirakud dam water reservoir have been opened. This takes the number of opened gates to eight for the release of rain water.

Due to heavy rains in the upper catchment region, the gates of Hirakud dam are being opened for the release of water. As many as five gates have been opened in the left side while three gates from the right side have been opened.

The water level of the reservoir is 629.97 feet. Currently, 2 lakh 5 thousand 424 cusecs of water is entering the reservoir while 1 lakh 67 thousand 307 cusecs of water is being drained out.

Meanwhile, the Hirakud reservoir authority has issued a warning to the lower end following the opening of the gates. It is to be mentioned here that another low pressure is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on the September 25.

It is likely to cross South Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on the September 27, and will develop into a depression. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in various districts of Odisha. As a result, heavy rainfall is likely in the state till the 28th.
