Environmentalists for collective effort to restore greenery after Fani

Surjit Kumar Dhal,BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 5: Noted environmentalist Professor Radhamohan has suggested planting cyclone resilient trees in areas prone to storms.
Speaking at a programme on “Restoration of Greenery post Fani” organized by a group of civil society organizations here on Tuesday he said, “Even as severe cyclonic storm Fani has damaged millions of trees, it is high time we thought of cyclone-resilient trees as cyclones are likely to be more frequent in the near future so far as the current scenario of global warming and Odisha’s vulnerability to climate change is concerned.”
He suggested planting trees like Neem, Patali, Saptaparni, Arjuna, Jamun, Kusum, Sunari, Tamarind, Acacia Mangium, Chironjee, Champa and Kanchana should be considered for avenue plantation.
He urged the government to think about regeneration of damaged trees and replantation of uprooted trees. Planting big trees should be avoided on the North direction of a house as direction of wind is generally North-East or North West during cyclones, he cautioned.
