Elephant guards bodies after killing two persons on Odisha border

Baripada: In a heart-wrenching incident, an elephant was seen guarding the bodies of two persons after killing them in Mayurbhanj district on Odisha-Jharkhand border.

Some residents including the two deceased persons of the Benisagar village on the bordering area went out of their houses to see the elephant reportedly after it entered the village last night.

In the meantime, the wild animal started chasing and attacking the locals. While everyone managed to escape from getting attacked, two youths could not run, following which the elephant attacked them causing their deaths on the spot.

What shocked and surprised everyone was that the villagers could not recovered the bodies of the two youths as the elephant was so furious and was seen guarding the bodies after killing the duo.

On being informed, a team of forest officials form Jharkhand reached the Benisagar village and tried to drive it out from the residential locality. However, it started to attack them as well. This left one of the forest employees critically injured. He was rushed to the Chaibasa hospital for treatment.

Efforts by the forest officials to chase the elephant from the human habitats are still underway. A probe into the matter is also going on.
