Deputy CM Singh Deo for affordable seed supply for farmers ahead of Kharif season

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to ensure a successful Kharif 2025 season for farmers across Odisha, Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, has emphasized the crucial need for the timely and affordable supply of quality seeds.
Addressing a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, Singh Deo asserted that no farmer in the state should face a shortage of seeds this season.
The meeting, convened by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, was focused on evaluating the availability, demand, and supply of various seeds for the upcoming agricultural season. Singh Deo called for proactive steps to streamline the distribution process, ensuring that seeds are delivered in accordance with the preferences and seasonal requirements of farmers.
“We need to ensure that farmers not only receive their seeds on time but also that the seeds meet the highest quality standards,” Singh Deo said. He directed officials to regularly sample and test seed varieties, with a particular emphasis on procuring and distributing vegetable seeds, which are vital for the state’s agricultural landscape.
Singh Deo also highlighted the significant subsidies provided by the state government, aimed at reducing the financial burden on farmers. The subsidies will benefit those with landholdings of up to 2 to 3 hectares, ensuring that seed procurement remains affordable and accessible. He underscored that providing ease of access and affordability for farmers is key to empowering the agricultural community in Odisha.
Dr. Arabinda Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Department, assured that the state was fully prepared for the Kharif season. “We have sufficient seed stock in place, and our primary focus is on maintaining seed quality. With the support of both central and state government subsidies, we will ensure the timely disbursement of benefits through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system,” Padhee added.
A detailed PowerPoint presentation was also shared during the session, outlining the requirements and availability of various seeds.
The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Shubham Saxena, Director of the Agriculture Department, Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, Director of the Horticulture Department, and other key stakeholders.
