Cuttack Celebrates 178th Birth Anniversary of Madhusudan Das

The city of Cuttack came alive on April 28, 2026, as people celebrated the 178th birth anniversary of Madhusudan Das, fondly remembered as “Madhu Babu.”


The day, widely observed as Swabhiman Diwas, reflects pride in Odisha’s identity and honours one of its most influential leaders.

Citizens from across the region participated in events paying tribute to his legacy as a pioneer of social reform and regional empowerment.


Patha Utsav Transforms Streets into Celebration Zones

One of the key highlights was the Patha Utsav at Barabati Durga Road, where streets were transformed into vibrant spaces filled with joy, creativity, and community participation.

Born in 1848 in Satyabhamapur near Cuttack, Madhusudan Das is regarded as the architect of modern Odisha. He was a visionary leader, freedom fighter, and social reformer who played a crucial role in shaping the state’s identity.

He holds the distinction of being the first Odia graduate and advocate, and he worked tirelessly towards the formation of a separate Odisha province based on linguistic identity.
