Coolie box office collection: Rajinikanth starer film becomes biggest Tamil opener world wide

Rajinikanth’s Coolie has emerged as the biggest Tamil opener, beating Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 at the box office. Sacnilk reports that Coolie earned Rs. 65 crore net on its opening day, whereas War 2 made Rs. 52.5 crore net. The Tamil movie dominated in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with consistent occupancy for its dubbed versions. Coolie’s global box office total is Rs. 150 crore gross, which is the highest opener for a Tamil movie worldwide.

The outstanding performance of the film can be credited to the enormous hype, star cast, and historic collaboration, featuring Rajinikanth, Lokesh Kanagaraj, Aamir Khan, Shruti Haasan, and Nagarjuna. Coolie earned a 86.99% overall Tamil occupancy on its opening day, while the Telugu version was almost packed with 92.10% occupancy. War 2 fared moderately in terms of occupancy, with the Hindi shows recording 29.24% and the Tamil shows recording 42.41%.

On its second day, Coolie collected Rs. 6.96 crore net in India and took its two day total to Rs. 71.96 crore net. Sumit Kadel, film trade analyst, awarded Coolie 3.5 stars, pointing out its non stop twists and turns. The ensemble cast of the film, which includes Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruthi Haasan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and Aamir Khan, has been well-received.

With the extended Independence weekend coming up, it will be fascinating to note how well both movies do at the box office. Much against negative reviews, Coolie appears to be banking on the star power of Rajinikanth, while War 2 will be waiting on people’s word-of-mouth and what shares of screens it gets.
