CM Majhi Opens Adivasi Mela 2026 in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday inaugurated Adivasi Mela 2026 at the Adivasi Ground in Unit–I, Bhubaneswar, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the state’s tribal communities.

The five-day event, which will continue until February 5, features 1,140 participants, including 325 tribal women from self-help groups. A total of 109 stalls and 10 traditional tribal huts have been set up, offering visitors a glimpse into indigenous lifestyle, architecture, art, food, and cultural practices.

Addressing the gathering, Majhi said Odisha is a land of diverse cultures where tribal communities have lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years. He noted that their traditions and worldview continue to guide society toward sustainable living.

The Chief Minister also paid tribute to tribal freedom fighters and revolutionary leaders such as Veer Surendra Sai, Laxman Naik, Dharanidhar Naik, Madho Singh, and Rendo Majhi, recalling their sacrifices for the nation.

Highlighting regional development, Majhi announced the formation of the Southern Odisha Development Council and Northern Odisha Development Council to address disparities in tribal-dominated regions. He stressed that tribal communities, who make up nearly one-fourth of Odisha’s population, have a constitutional right to be part of the development mainstream.

“The mela is not just entertainment, but a reflection of tribal life, their struggles, and their deep connection with nature,” Majhi said. He added that while last year’s fair generated business worth ₹9 crore, this year’s edition is expected to surpass that figure.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Chief Minister assured tribal communities of protection over their land, forest, and water resources, stating that safeguarding these rights remains a top priority.

On the occasion, Majhi released the research journal ‘Adivasi’ published by the department and felicitated distinguished tribal individuals from various fields.

ST & SC Development Minister Nityananda Gond said culture reflects a nation’s heritage and self-respect, adding that the government is working to integrate tribal communities into the development process. He highlighted key welfare initiatives such as the Chief Minister’s Tribal Livelihood Mission, Merit Scholarship Scheme, and the Madho Singh Allowance Scheme aimed at reducing school dropout rates.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary B. Parmeshwaran delivered the welcome address, while SCSTRTI Director Sudhakar Sabar proposed the vote of thanks.
