CM Majhi Hints at Major Expansion Plan for Barabati Stadium

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has indicated that a proposal to significantly expand and modernise Cuttack’s iconic Barabati Stadium is under active consideration by the state government.
Speaking to reporters, CM Majhi confirmed that the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has already submitted a detailed proposal for the stadium’s upgrade.

“Our government has considered this matter. A proposal has been received from the OCA and the people about the expansion and modernisation of the Barabati Stadium. The state government will decide very soon,” he said.
Barabati Stadium, one of India’s oldest cricketing venues, currently accommodates around 45,000 spectators. The proposed expansion aims to enhance both capacity and infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also extended his appreciation to the OCA, district administration, police and various state departments for ensuring smooth conduct of the India–South Africa T20 match on Tuesday.
India clinched a commanding 101-run victory in the first T20I, powered by all-rounder Hardik Pandya and a strong bowling performance. Following the win, CM Majhi congratulated Team India and praised the electrifying atmosphere at Barabati.
In a post on X, he wrote that the stadium “came alive with the kind of cricket that makes the whole country cheer,” adding that the enthusiasm on display reflected Barabati’s historic legacy in Indian cricket. He also lauded the coordinated efforts of officials and volunteers for delivering a seamless experience to spectators.
Calling it a “proud moment for Odisha and India,” the Chief Minister said the memorable night once again highlighted Barabati Stadium’s enduring sporting heritage.
